We've Been Looking at Women's Health All Wrong

Your body adapts to your life

This is something I’ve come to understand very differently because your body is remarkably intelligent and constantly adapting to what you ask of her. When something hurts, you naturally change how you move, sometimes consciously but often without realizing you’re doing it. Following an injury or surgery, another part of your body may begin doing more of the work.
You may stand differently, shorten your stride, protect one side or stop reaching quite as far. Eventually, that compensation can become so familiar that it simply feels like the way you move.
Years later, the original injury may have healed while the movement pattern it created remains.
This is one reason I’ve become so passionate about teaching women how to move correctly for their bodies rather than simply telling them they need to move more. Those are very different conversations, especially as our bodies change through different stages of life.
I don’t believe a woman’s body suddenly becomes incapable because she reaches a certain birthday. I do believe we need to understand the body we’re moving today instead of continually expecting her to perform exactly as she did decades ago.

There is also everything we can’t see

Our bodies are responding to far more than movement because nourishment, sleep, stress, loss, relationships, responsibility and our emotional lives are all part of the environment in which we live.

That doesn’t mean every physical symptom is caused by an emotion.
It means I no longer believe we can have an intelligent conversation about a woman’s physical wellbeing while pretending her emotional life exists somewhere outside her body.
Anyone who has experienced heartbreak, frightening news or a sleepless night worrying about someone they love already understands this connection.
Breathing can change, muscles tighten, appetite disappears, sleep becomes disrupted and energy can feel completely different.
The experience isn’t happening only in your thoughts because your physiology is participating too.

This is where the conversation changed for me

Once I started working with minerals added another important piece.
Being able to see at a cellular level through lab results, I now had proof of the emotional connection to what she was experiencing physically. Especially for the woman who had repeatedly been told everything was within the “normal range,”
Many felt as though their bodies simply weren’t as resilient anymore and had “what do you expect at your age”. Many were taking supplements, self prescribed, and wonder why nothing changes.
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis gave me another way of looking at mineral patterns and what the body may have available to work with, but I quickly realized minerals weren’t the whole answer either
Movement wasn’t the whole answer, nor were emotions and neither was another diet, detox or other trend.
The common thread was the woman herself.
That realization brought together work I had been studying, practicing and teaching from different directions for decades, and eventually it became the foundation of

The Conscious Body Method.

Instead of asking only what is wrong, I became much more interested in asking what the body might be communicating.
What has she adapted to, what has she been compensating for, and what patterns have become so familiar that you no longer recognize them as patterns?
Where might you still be pushing harder because that’s what you’ve always done, when your body is asking you to respond differently?
This is the conversation I want women to begin having with themselves.

Understand your Body. Your Patterns. Your Design.

I’m less interested than ever in telling women what everyone should be doing because I don’t believe there is one formula every woman should follow. I’m interested in helping a woman understand her own body and recognize the connections she may have never been shown before.
Your body has been gathering information from the life you’ve lived for decades, adapting and responding along the way.
The aches, exhaustion, restless nights or feeling that something simply isn’t right is are clues I often call red flags. It’s all data she’s sending you to be alerted to what’s really going on.
So rather than reaching for more supplements or start a new gym program,
become curious about what she wants you to pay attention to.

There was a time when I thought of the different things happening in my body as separate issues. Pain was pain, sleep was sleep, digestion was digestion, and an old injury was simply something that happened years ago.

Stress belonged in the emotional category, while nutrition and supplements belonged in the physical one. If a test came back within the normal range, I was supposed to feel reassured, even when I didn’t feel normal at all

Over the past several years, I’ve become increasingly interested in what happens when we stop separating a woman into pieces. I couldn’t stop seeing it.
A woman might come to me because she’s exhausted. As we talk, I discover she also isn’t sleeping well. Her hip hurts even though the original injury happened years ago, she’s taking a collection of supplements, her digestion has changed, and certain movements no longer feel comfortable or she’s unable to.
And this is where the deeper dive starts to reveal the truth, at the same time,
she’s carrying enormous sadness over:
- a relationship issue with her spouse or children
- grieving a loss
- dealing with anxiety
or simply feeling the weight of years spent being responsible for everyone around her.
We tend to treat these things as separate problems, often seeing different practitioners and searching for a different solution for each one.
But what if they aren’t as separate as we’ve been led to believe?
